I have been associated and involved in the construction industry for approximately 36 continuous years.

I started my working career with the family business where I was launched into the world of enterprise, learning the basics of project management and a trade apprenticeship. I moved onto working as a surveyor for a restoration company specialising in waterproofing and timber repairs. I left this company to join a government organisation as a Higher Professional and Technical Officer where I developed my broader management skills, surveying and partnership working.

At the end of 2001 I resigned from this organisation to become self-employed. Initially acting as a surveying consultant to a variety of individuals and companies. In partnership, I now manage two companies where we plan, advise and project manage capital works schemes from inception through to completion. I am NEBOSH qualified in construction health and safety and now offer an advisory service in construction, design and management.

My specific skills are as follows:

  • A broad and comprehensive understanding of the construction process;
  • An in depth understanding of rural and urban conservation issues and the balance needed to be struck between preserving the essential fabric of the building and the need to adapt to new uses;
  • Understanding of environmental issues relating to the built environment;
  • IT skills including a thorough working knowledge of Word and Excel, and use of construction project estimating software and various databases for property and client management purposes;
  • Wide range of practical construction skills;
  • Ability to manage complex project management issues;
  • Personnel management;
  • Health & Safety legislation;
  • Building regulations knowledge and principles of energy conservation in retrofit and new build projects;
  • Design skills and the use of AutoCAD;
  • Estimating, production of schedules and specification writing;
  • Practical knowledge of property management including commercial letting.
